Downingtown East suffers season-ending loss to district champion Conestoga in state opener

(1-1) Conestoga 8, (1-6) Downingtown East 4 – The Cougars’ offense disappeared for 30-plus crucial minutes in their season-ending loss to the District 1 champion Pioneers in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA Tournament Wednesday at West Chester East.
The lengthy drought lasting from early in the second quarter to late in the fourth was instrumental in ending a strong season at 11-13 for D-East, which reached the state playoffs as the No. 24 seed and final team to qualify for the District 1 tournament.
The run to the state playoffs featured wins over top 10 seeds Wissahickon and Boyertown on the road and a 7-2 victory over No. 5 seed CB West in playbacks, enabling the Cougars to punch their ticket to the PIAA phase of the postseason.
Nico Iacovino finished with 18 saves for D-East while Cooper DiCicco, Alyster Hemberger, Dylan Kilroy and Zach Lee scored goals.
