Wrap: Warfel, Aungst help Downingtown East secure 3rd in district; Sun Valley falls short

UWCHLAN  – Paige Warfel hit for a game-high 19 points and Aryah Aungst added 13 as Downingtown East rebounded from a sluggish start to drill Spring-Ford 48-31 in the District 1-AAAA third-place game Saturday evening.

The Cougars, who move on to face (District 3-4 seed) Milton Hershey in the opening round of the state tournament Friday at an undetermined site, trailed 24-19 at the break before rattling off 13 unanswered points at the start of the third quarter to seize control.

Leading 36-26 entering the final frame, D-East (22-7) pulled away with a 12-5 burst over the final 8 minutes.

For the Rams (17-10), who draw (D12-3) Archbishop Carroll in the opening round of states Friday, Maggie Locke led the way with 9 points.

(3) Merion Mercy 41, (5) Sun Valley 30 – The Vanguards were denied the first trip to the state tournament in program history after dropping the third-place District 1-AAA consolation game at Garnet Valley.

Kate Lannan finished with 10 points while Madison Corrento, Brooke Duncan and Hannah Turner added 5 apiece for Sun Valley, which finishes it season at 17-8.
