Wrap: Unionville falls short of Red Lion; Great Valley wins in Wildwood

UPPER MARLBOROUGH – It was a home invasion of sorts for Unionville, which suffered a 40-33 loss to Red Lion in the opening round of the Unionville Holiday Tournament Monday.

The visiting Lions (7-2) expanded an 18-13 halftime lead to 32-23 with a 14-10 run in the third quarter and the Indians (5-3) never fully recovered, dropping into a consolation round game with Liberty Tuesday (4:30 p.m.). Red Lion draws Central Bucks East for the tourney title.

Micayla Flores collected 12 points and Maddie Shanahan added 9 for Unionville.

Great Valley 41, Brandywine, (Del.) 28 – The Patriots posted a 14-0 shutout in the fourth quarter to secure the win at the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood (N.J.). Ashlyn Smith had 7 of her game-high 22 points in the decisive frame, picking up three steals in that stretch to complement a team-high 7 rebounds. Emilee Kirk chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds for Great Valley.

West Chester East 48, Bensalem 36 – The Vikings overcame a 20-19 halftime deficit with a 29-16 burst in the second half en route to victory at the Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials Classic. Caitlin Culbertson (14 points), Holly Hager (13) and Maura McCloskey (13 rebounds, 8 points) led the way for WC East.

Kennett 51, Kennard-Dale 29 – Jess Hussey came off the injured list and dropped 12 points to match teammate Miranda Hill’s total as the Blue Demons prevailed at the Muhlenberg Holiday Tournament. Trailing 21-18 at the break, Kennett, which draws host Muhlenberg for the tourney title Tuesday, took charge with a 33-8 blitz in the second half.
