Wrap: Kennett’s win over Unionville is ‘extra’ special

KENNETT SQUARE – Kennett banged out seven extra-base hits in recording a 10-7 come-from-behind Ches-Mont League American Conference softball victory over Unionville in 8 innings Monday.

Trailing 7-5 entering the top of the sixth inning, the Blue Demons scored twice to forge the deadlock before adding a three-run uprising in the eighth to seal the verdict.

Winning pitcher Brooke Horner collected two doubles and 2 RBIs for Kennett, helping offset the strong performances at the plate by the Indians’ Austin Langerhans (home run, 2 RBI) and Amy Large (2 hits, 2 RBI).

West Chester Henderson 8, Downingtown East 7 – Bailey Harris came through with an RBI-single in the top of the eighth inning to help the Warriors (1-1 overall) capture the National Conference opener for both schools.

Henderson trailed 7-1 before forcing extra innings with three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Heidi McCollister’s three-run homer in the fifth and Megan Butts’ two-run single in the seventh were the key blows in the comeback.

For the Cougars (1-1 overall), Lauren Friedman went 2-for-5 with two runs while losing pitcher Paige Warfel also hit safely twice.

Downingtown West 7, Bishop Shanahan 1 – Annie Hays slammed a three-run double in the first inning and that was more than enough for Amanda Seckinger and the Whippets in the National Conference opener.

Seckinger allowed just two hits and struck out 14 for Downingtown West, which got strong offensive showings from Zoe Senn (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and Jenny Melillo (3-for-3, RBI). Nikki Keefe took the loss for the Eagles.

West Chester East 9, Coatesville 8 – Sarah McDade drove home the winning run with her third hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Vikings to the National Conference comeback win.

Down 8-6 entering the seventh, West Chester East scored three times to turn the table on the Red Raiders. Olivia Franconano had four hits, including a double and home run, and scored four runs to lead the Vikings.

Avon Grove 6, Oxford 1 – The Red Devils exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to knock off the Chargers in the American Conference and season opener for both schools.

Avon Grove got RBI-doubles from Morgan Von Sciver and Ally Volko and RBI-singles from Emma Daly and Madison Porter in the big inning, which began with Porter’s leadoff triple. The uprising made a winner of sophomore Maggie Balint, a University of Delaware early commit who struck out 13 in four overpowering innings.

Courtney Gall went 3-for-4 for the Red Devils, who committed a throwing error after Alex Mitros’ triple to allow Oxford to score its only run.
