Wrap: Great Valley squeaks by Unionville in battle of unbeatens

UNIONVILLE – Keyed by victories at second and third singles from Adarsh Nair and Chris Shannon, Great Valley netted a 4-3 Ches-Mont American boys’ tennis victory over Unionville in a battle of unbeatens Tuesday.

The victory helps the Patriots remain in a two-way tie atop the division at 4-0 with West Chester Rustin. Unionville dropped one game off the pace at 3-1 with the setback.

West Chester Henderson 7, Kennett 0 – The Warriors improved to 5-0 in the league as Andrew Maza at third singles and Matt Crawford and Neil Seoni at third doubles posted straight set wins without dropping a game. Kennett is now 1-4 in the Ches-Mont.

Bishop Shanahan 5, Avon Grove 2 – The Eagles (1-4) broke into the win column behind the comeback triumph posted by the third doubles team of Matt Brown/Ryan Paulakinas. Brown/Paulakinas overcame a 5-2 deficit in the first set to net the win in straight sets.

For the Red Devils (2-3), Billy Rocker and Kunal Lobo prevailed at first and second singles, respectively.

West Chester Rustin 4, Downingtown East 3 – Ben Newman’s victory at third singles sealed the Golden Knights’ victory. Rustin (4-0, 6-1) shares the American lead with Great Valley while the Cougars fell to 4-1 in the league.

West Chester East 7, Oxford 0 – The Vikings raised their Ches-Mont slate to 4-1, winning six of the seven matches in straight sets. The lone exception to that show of dominance was Saran Viswanathan’s 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 conquest of Josh Stillman at first singles. Oxford is now 1-4 in the league and overall.

Downingtown West 7, Octorara 0 – The Whippets upped their league record to 3-2 by posting all seven wins in straight sets, sparked by 6-0, 6-0 victories at third (Max Beneke/Ted Schlamb) and fourth doubles (Jeremy Cleary/Kyle Oberholtzer).
The loss drops Octorara to 0-6 in the league and overall.
