Unionville tops Avon Grove to keep perfect start intact

EAST MARLBOROUGH – Unionville continued its perfect run to start the season, riding a solid defense and a pair of touchdown passes from Alex Gorgone to a 14-6 nonleague triumph over Avon Grove Friday night.
The Indians (3-0), converted a pair of turnovers into touchdowns during the second quarter for a 14-0 halftime lead, then held on down the stretch behind a defense that limited the winless Red Devils (0-3) to 205 yards of offense.
Alex Pelegrin’s pick of Shane Wolford eventually led to an 11-yard TD pass from Gorgone to JT Hower to open the scoring for the Indians, who capitalized on a botched fake punt attempt late in the second quarter to go up 14-0 when Joe Zubillaga turned a bubble screen into a 21-yard TD reception.
The Red Devils cut the gap to 14-6 at the end of the third quarter on Wolford’s 50-yard TD run but could get no closer, despite the strong running of Kevin Francis (27 carries, 115 yards).
Unionville also got impressive work on the ground from Dante Graham, who had 15 carries for 117 yards including a 43-yard burst to set up Gorgone’s first TD pass. Zubillaga contributed 85 yards from scrimmage (53 rushing, 32 receiving).
