Unionville returns to the top with Flyers Cup win over West Chester East

WEST GOSHEN – Top-seeded Unionville rebounded from a sluggish start with eight unanswered goals en route to an 8-2 win over West Chester East for the Flyers Cup girls championship Monday night at Ice Line.

Trailing 2-0 when the No. 3 Vikings’ Jennifer Porter and Mary Shupard lit up the lamp in a span of 13 seconds just 2:50 into the contest, the Indians drew even on goals by Kaitlyn Anderson and Hannah Close before posting four goals in the second to go up 6-2.

“They got a little stunned there in the beginning,” said Unionville coach Dave Elvin on the web site. “The girls play with an awful lot of confidence — they settled down pretty nicely and then went after it with a great deal of intensity. I’m quite proud of how they responded.”

Freshman Madison Doucette led the second-period barrage with all three of her goals en route to being named the tournament MVP for Unionville, which won its fifth Flyers Cup crown in six years. After a four-year run that began in 2010, the Indians were unseated last season by Downingtown East before regaining the throne in 2015

“It is very nice to reclaim that trophy,’ said Elvin. “We are very relieved to have the trophy back and look forward to defending it.”

Claire Donovan added two goals and one assist for the winners.
