State girls cross country: Henderson’s Mulhern earns gold; West Chester East’s Clarke places third

HERSHEY – West Chester Henderson freshman Jenna Mulhern covered the Hershey Parkview Course in 18:42 to capture the gold medal at Saturday’s PIAA Class 3A championship, helping the Warriors place second in the team competition.

West Chester East’s Allyson Clarke earned the bronze in the event, clocking in at 19:05 to finish behind Mulhern and second-place Kileigh Kane of State College, who finished in 18:50.

Other top 30 finishers from the Ches-Mont on the girls side included Unionville senior Madison McGovern (18th, 19:52), Henderson seniors Courtney Kitchen (19th, 19:53) and Courtney Alexander (21st, 19:59), Unionville freshman Sarah Coates (23rd, 20:03) and Avon Grove sophomore Lauren O’Neil (28th, 20:13).

Mulhern, the District 1 champion, set a strong early pace, turning in a time of 5:32 to hang behind early leader Hannah Schupansky of Oakland Catholic. After the second mile, Mulhern left Schupansky (8th) and Kane behind en route to breaking the tape.
