Smuda’s double-double not enough for Downingtown East in state playoff loss

(3-2) Dallastown 43, (1-8) Downingtown East 39 – Bella Smuda stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks but it wasn’t enough as the Ches-Mont League champion Cougars suffered the season-ending loss in the opening round of the PIAA Class 6A playoffs Friday night at West York High School.

The loss was the fourth straight for D-East (20-9), including three at the end of the District 1-6A Tournament after reaching the district quarterfinals with a 54-46 state playoff qualifying win over Methacton.

Smuda, a 6-foot-5 junior center committed to Division I Liberty (VA) University, had the Cougars within striking distance at 36-34 heading into the fourth quarter. But D-East, which got a combined 11 points from two other underclassmen – Lauren Kent and Caroline Brennan – couldn’t get over the top, scoring just five points in the final frame to see its season end at 20-9.

Sam Miller finished with 16 points and Lily Jamison added 10 for Dallastown (25-3), the York-Adams League champions who move on to face (1-7) Council Rock North Tuesday in the Round of 16 at a time and site to be determined. CR North cruised past (12-2) Central High (Philadelphia) in its PIAA opener Friday.
