Slay helps Downingtown East surge by Unionville; D-West, Shanahan take openers

EAST MARLBOROUGH – Malik Slay flashed for 27 points as Downingtown East used a 20-0 run in the third quarter to record a 68-61 victory over Unionville in the season-opening Unionville Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.
Freshman Andrew King added 12 points and Jarred Desrocher added 11 for the Cougars, who trailed by 17 points with 4:00 left in the third quarter before the tide-turning run.
D-East hit 12 of 14 free throws down the stretch to seal the deal after Scottie Miller’s trey had drawn the Indians within 54-53 at the 3:20 mark. For Unionville, Bo Furey-Bastian (21 points), Miller (17) and Andrew Burich (12) hit double figures.

Trailing 29-21 at the break, Henderson was outscored 18-11 in the third period to fall out of contention.
