Shanahan’s season ends in state quarterfinals

WEST GROVE – Bishop Shanahan was unable to hold a late lead in sustaining a season-ending 5-4 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg in the quarterfinals of the state Class 5A softball playoffs Thursday at Avon Grove.

Leading 4-3 in the sixth inning after scoring three times in the top of the frame, the Eagles were overtaken by the Pioneers when freshman Julz Garber laced a two-run double to provide a 5-4 advantage.

Shanahan’s three-run rally in the sixth featured a two-run single from Casey McAllister and singles from Katie Newton, Miranda Bedics and Annie Weyand. Weyand scored the first run in the second on the back end of a double steal.

Devon Miller struck out eight in absorbing the loss.

The victory sends Lampeter-Strasburg to the state semifinals Monday (6 pm) at Millersville University against Lancaster-Lebanon League rival Donegal, a 6-5 winner over Abington Heights in 10 innings Thursday.
