Shanahan’s Powell places 5th in 500 free at state championships

LEWISBURG – Bishop Shanahan senior Tom Powell capped his stellar scholastic swimming career with a fifth-place finish in 500-yard freestyle at the PIAA Class AA championships this past weekend at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

Powell followed up his 12th-place finish in the 200 free (1:44.71) with his medal-earning effort Friday, knocking nearly 4 seconds off his pre-race qualifying time of 4:45.01 with a 4:41.57 clocking in the 500-free final.

Powell’s effort helped the Eagles place 29th in the team standings with 19 points. Grove City (175), Cathedral Prep (161.5) and Salisbury (133) were the top three finishers in Class AA boys.

Shanahan junior Trevor Kern also had a strong showing at Bucknell, placing 22nd in the 50 free (22.33).
