Shanahan’s historic season ends in state quarterfinals (updated)

(12-1) Archbishop Wood 2, (1-1) Bishop Shanahan 1 – The Eagles were unable to sustain an early lead en route to the season-ending loss Saturday at Phoenixville High.
Up 1-0 on a strike by senior Jake Frank in the fourth minute, Shanahan was blanked the rest of the way – overtaken by second-half goals by Bob Hennessey (header off cross in the box) and Christian Petro (Hennessey assist).
The District 1-3A champion Eagles, who notched the first state level win in program history with a 3-2 conquest of Greencastle –Antrim Tuesday, finish their season at 19-9. Wood moves on to a state semifinal date at a neutral site with Northwest Lehigh.
“We did a great job this season,” Shanahan coach Jim Kalavik said in the West Chester Daily Local News. “At the end of the day, we had two opportunities in the first half and two more in the second half that we didn’t score on, and we let in two goals that we shouldn’t have.
“But they’re a good team. We knew going in that Wood is a very fast, physical and athletic team. They have no quit in their tanks and they proved that today. They continued to press and you know, everyone is playing to try and get to Hershey. Their foot was firmly on the gas and ours came off.”
Despite the loss, Frank didn’t lose perspective of what had been accomplished in 2017, saying in the Daily Local, “This was an incredible season. This is Shanahan history right here. We did what we could, but sometimes the ball just doesn’t roll your way. It is what is. You have to keep your head high. Hopefully next year we can come out and get a state championship.”
