Shanahan reaches state quarterfinals behind Smith, Elder, Burns

PIAA State Championships Class 4A First Round
(1-1) Bishop Shanahan 3, (11-2) Nazareth 1 – The nationally-ranked and unbeaten Eagles advanced to the second round of the state playoffs with a 25-14, 25-17, 21-25, 25-17 victory Tuesday.

Outside hitter Kailey Smith – filling in for the injured Natalie Ogden (sprained ankle) – led the way with 12 kills and 4 digs. Tess Elder (11 kills, 5 blocks) and Brooke Burns (10 kills, 14 digs, assist) also had strong outings for the District 1 and Ches-Mont League champion Eagles, who face (12-1) Archbishop Carroll in the state quarterfinals Saturday (time, site TBD).

Carroll, which has already dropped three matches to Shanahan earlier this season, moved on with a 3-0 sweep of (1-4) Pennsbury Tuesday.
