Roundup: Shanahan leads Unionville past neighborhood rival Kennett

GBB_20150115_KvsU_2KENNETT SQUARE – Unionville secured neighborhood bragging rights behind Maddie Shanahan’s game-high 17 points in a 49-39 Ches-Mont League American Division conquest of Kennett Thursday night.

Leading 26-20 at the break, the Indians (5-2 league, 9-4 overall) took charge with an 18-11 burst to go up 44-31 en route to their third straight win.

“I was pleased with our effort,” said Unionville coach Fred Elizy. “We’re constantly playing hard, we have been improving since Day 1 and it showed on the floor. In the first half we were a little slow, but in the second half we picked up our defensive intensity and pushed out the lead a little bit.”

The uptick in play resulted in an 18-11 third-quarter run, turning a tight 26-20 lead at the intermission into a comfortable 44-31 advantage heading into the final frame.

For the scuffling Blue Demons (1-6, 3-12), whose losing streak reached five, Miranda Hill led all scorers with 19 points on three triples. But  that was not enough to overcome the hot hands of Shanahan and Adrianna Weber (10 points).

GBB_20150115_KvsU_1“It was a great performance by Maddie Shanahan,” Elizy said. “She is a sophomore and has been doing a great job as our second-leading scorer all season behind Micayla Flores. Micayla has been off the last couple of games but Maddie has stepped up. The scoring has been spread around between a lot of different people, and that is what has carried us.”
