Roundup: Harner fires no-hitter, records 500th career strikeout in Kennett win

KENNETT SQUARE  – Brooke Harner fired a no-hitter and registered her 500th career strikeout as Kennett shut out visiting Oxford, 6-0, in Ches-Mont League softball action Thursday.

Harner struck out 12, walked one and hit another while contributing at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Also for Kennett (2-0, 2-1 overall), Camille Brown had two hits including a two-run homer to help drop Oxford to 0-2 in the Ches-Mont.

Avon Grove 8, Downingtown East 3 – Maggie Balint hurled a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lift the Red Devils (2-0, 2-0) to the Ches-Mont triumph. Balint, a sophomore who has already verbally committed to Delaware, lost her no-hitter when Aryah Aungst singled with two outs in the seventh.

Keying the offense for Avon Grove were Balint (2 triples), Emily Daly (3 hits, RBI), and Alyssa Herion (2 hits, RBI). The Cougars fell to 0-2 in the Ches-Mont with the loss.

West Chester Rustin 9, Sun Valley 5 – Caela Abadie did it all with her arm and bat to lift the Golden Knights to the Ches-Mont win in the season opener for both teams.

Abadie belted three home runs including a grand slam, doubled and collected 6 RBI while tossing a four-hitter that featured 10 strikeouts. Also for Rustin, Anna Steinmetz homered and Brittany Fichter went 2-for-3.

West Chester East 10, West Chester Henderson 5 – The Vikings rode the long ball to a Ches-Mont win over the Warriors, getting a three-run homer from Taylor Judge and homer, triple and three RBI from Olivia Francomano.

Olivia Rogers earned the mound win for WC East (2-0), despite a strong offensive showing by Megan Butts (3-for-4, 2 RBI) for Henderson (1-1, 1-2).

Unionville 4, Downingtown West 3 – The Indians scored three times in the sixth inning to capture the Ches-Mont triumph.

Madi Ross belted a two-run double to highlight the uprising, which helped Unionville improve to 1-1. Amy Large worked five innings for the win and Austin Langerhans pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the save.

Gianna Melillo had a solo home run for the Whippets (1-1).

Great Valley 14, Octorara 3 (5 innings) – The Patriots scored 11 runs in the third inning to nail down the Ches-Mont American win over the Braves in a contest shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

Morgan Orlowski (3-for-3, 4 RBI), Emilie Kirk (2 hits, 3 runs) and Marit Vike (2 hits, 2 runs) were the big hitters for Great Valley (1-0, 2-0 overall). Octorara was playing its season opener.
