Roundup: Great Valley, WC East open with wins

POTTSTOWN – The shutdown arms of Colin Duclos, Dylan Nicklas, Allen Barry and Tom Allen delivered a 2-1 victory for Great Valley over Pottstown in the nonleague season opener for both teams Friday.

The foursome combined on a one-hitter with Nicklas getting the win by tossing three hitless innings of relief with one walk and four strikeouts. Allen notched the save.

Trailing 1-0 after the Trojans pushed across an unearned run in the home first, the Patriots drew even when Carter Rubin crossed on the back end of a double steal in the third. Barry singled to start the fourth inning, advanced to second on a walk, reached third on a wild pitch and came across with the game-winner on Joe Leonetti’s sacrifice fly to right.

W.C. East 5, Saint Joseph’s Prep 4 – Shane Springer’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning deadlocked things at 3-3, with the eventual game-winning run scoring from second base when the Prep outfielder lost track of the outs on the play and failed to throw the ball back to the infield.

The Vikings used three pitchers for two innings apiece, with Culver Hughes (4 strikeouts) and Donald Edwards (2 strikeouts) allowing no runs and just one hit apiece. Edwards earned the win with Jimmy Maguire notching the save, striking out the side but allowing one run in the seventh. Ian Street doubled for West Chester East.
