Riccardo, Smyth help Downingtown West join Unionville, WC East in state quarterfinals

PHILADELPHIA – Romea Riccardo and Julianna Smyth collected two goals each to key a dominating effort that carried (District 1, 4 seed) Downingtown West to a 5-1 victory over District 12 champion Cardinal O’Hara in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A playoffs Tuesday night at the Germantown Super Site.
The Whippets (17-5) move on to face (11-1) Emmaus, the state’s top-ranked team, in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined. Emmaus moved on with an 8-1 romp over (1-5) CB East.
D-West avenged a 2-1 regular-season loss to the Lions (20-2), and was never seriously challenged after racing out to a 3-0 lead early in the second half.

(1-3) Unionville 5, (6-1) State College 0 – The Indians (20-2) moved on to the state quarterfinals in convincing fashion as Katie Anderson and Annie McDonough scored two goals apiece. Also for Unionville, Anderson and Madison Miles added two assists each and Lizzie Gaebel posted two saves for the shutout.
Unionville moves on to face District 3 champion Palmyra Saturday at an undetermined time and site in the quarters. Palmyra advanced with a 2-0 win over (1-6) Council Rock South Tuesday.

(1-4) West Chester East 4, (11-1) Southern Lehigh 3 – Kelly Conlon cashed in a pair of goals early in the second half to snap a 2-2 standoff as the Vikings (14-9) came from behind to reach the state quarterfinals.
WC East trailed 2-0 midway through the first half before Lauren Fredricks scored at the 8:12 mark and Valerie Fay notched the equalizer with 1:27 left in the first half.
Conlon took over in the second half, scoring off an Erica Storey assist with 27:01 left before building the advantage to 4-2 with another strike at the 9:35 mark.
Leading the way at the defensive end for East, which faces (2-2) Crestwood (2-1 over Twin Valley) in the Round of 8 Saturday (site, time TBA) were goalies Nikki Bentley and Carlee Fulton and back Amilia Andraos.

(3-1) Donegal 4, (1-5) Henderson 1 – The Warriors ended their season at 18-5 after falling short in the state opener at Penn Manor High School. Kasey Collins had the lone goal and Emily Franco came up with eight saves for Henderson, which was outscored 3-1 in the second half after trailing by just 1-0 at the break.
