Reardon, Lewis, Jones key Downingtown West; Rustin ousted

(1-4) Downingtown West 3, (12-1) Archbishop Carroll 1 – Aly Reardon (20 kills, 5 digs, 3 aces), Hailey Lewis (12 kills, 9 aces) and UConn recruit Audrey Jones (10 kills) led the way as the Whippets captured their PIAA Class 4A girls volleyball playoff opener Tuesday at Bishop McDevitt.
D-West prevailed by counts of 25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 25-20 to advance to Saturday’s state quarterfinal matchup with Ches-Mont League rival Bishop Shanahan, a 3-1 victor over Hempfield Tuesday. Shanahan topped the Whippets 3-0 in the district semifinals.
D-West, which avenged a state playoff loss to Carroll in 2016, used a 6-0 run to take the decisive fourth set, with Paige Polsin’s kill snapping a 9-all deadlock and triggering the burst.
(3-1) Cumberland Valley 3, (1-5) Rustin 2 – The Golden Knights were unable to sustain a 2-1 set lead in suffering the season-ending loss to the Eagles in the opening round of the District 1-4A tournament.
After falling in the opening set 25-21, Rustin used a strong service performance led by Dani Emrich to take the second set 25-15 before Emily Supplee’s kill provided a 29-27 win in the third set.
But the District 3 champions rebounded to take sets four and five by respective scores of 25-18 and 15-10 behind Morgan Runk’s 15 kills, ending Rustin’s season at 19-7.
