Rafferty, Goforth help Shanahan reach state semifinals

(1-1) Bishop Shanahan 12, (11-1) Southern Lehigh 8 – The District 1 champion Eagles bolted out to a 7-2 halftime lead and held on down the stretch in recording the victory over the District 11 champions Saturday in the second round of the PIAA Class AA boys’ lacrosse playoffs at Exeter Twp. High.
Shanahan (20-1), which moves on to face (2-1) Crestwood in the state semifinals Tuesday at a time and site to be determined, set the tone with a 5-2 edge in the first quarter and expanded the lead to 7-2 at the break in its wire-to-wire conquest.
Bryan Rafferty cashed four goals and one assist and Gabe Goforth contributed a hat trick for Shanahan, which got eight saves from goalie Nic Pezone. Also for the Eagles, Kyle Gucwa and Owen Mehock had two goals each and combined for four assists, led by Gucwa’s three.
Crestwood advanced with a 22-14 triumph over Lancaster Country Day School Saturday.
