PW uses late rally to upend Downingtown East for third place in district

(6) Plymouth Whitemarsh 5, (5) Downingtown East 3 – The Colonials sent nine batters to the plate and pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory in the District 1-6A third-place game Thursday.
Coming off a 5-3 loss to Central Bucks South in the district semifinals Tuesday, Ches-Mont League National Division champion D-East (16-6) had taken a 3-1 lead with three runs in the sixth inning on Will Vincent’s two-run single and Connor Lynch’s sacrifice fly. Singles by Anthony Giancantarino and Dave Owsik (bunt) had started the rally.
But after drawing within 3-2 on Daulton Carlisle’s RBI-single in the sixth, PW took charge in its final at-bat as Kevin Reilly drove across the go-ahead run with a single and Jesse Jaconski scored another with an RBI-groundout after the tying run had crossed on a wild pitch earlier in the frame.
The Cougars threatened in the seventh, but Jacob Nunez speared Zach Burton’s line drive at second base and doubled Albert Choi off first to end the drama. Choi had drawn a one-out walk.
D-East will open the PIAA playoffs on the road against the District 2/4 champion – Hazleton or Williamsport – Monday at a time and site to be determined.
For PW, which turned three double plays and got 2 1/3 shutout innings with three strikeouts from winning pitcher Brett Bottinger, the first-round opponent in the state playoffs Monday is District 11 champion Liberty or Emmaus.
