Peterson, Miller lift Shanahan past Spring Grove in state opener

MECHANICSBURG – Alexa Peterson drove in a pair of runs and Devon Miller was dominant in the circle with 15 strikeouts during a complete-game effort that carried Bishop Shanahan to a 5-2 victory over Spring Grove in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs Tuesday.

The Eagles move on to face (3-4) Lampeter-Strasburg in the state quarterfinals Thursday (time TBA) at Avon Grove. Lampeter-Strasburg advanced with a 15-5 romp over District 12 champion Archbishop Wood.

Shanahan drew first blood in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk to Miranda Bedics and tacked on another in the third on Peterson’s first RBI-single following a double by Annie Weyand.

After Spring Grove pulled within 2-1 in the fourth, the Eagles provided more cushion for Miller with RBI-singles by Peterson (fifth) and Casey McAllister (sixth) en route to a commanding 5-1 lead. Miller allowed six hits, two earned runs and two walks against her 15 strikeouts.
