Oxford, Henderson sweep to victory in openers

NEWTOWN  – Oxford opened its 2017 girls volleyball season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Marple Newtown – prevailing by counts of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-15 behind Sarah Robinson (6 kills), Logan Wolfe (5 kills), Julianna Huggard (3 blocks) and Madeline Williams (6 aces).

Henderson 3, Chichester 0 – Fiona Pyfer (10 kills, 4 aces), Hope Ousey (11 kills) and Gabi Whoriskey (4 blocks) were the principal forces for the Warriors, who took their season opener 25-8, 25-22, and 25-16.

Great Valley 3, Phoenixville 1 – The Patriots captured their season opener 26-24, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 behind the solid contributions of Rose Mullen and Alanna Cunningham.

Rustin  3, Haverford High 0 – Emma Nelson (12 kills, 3 aces), Kalia Johnson (8 kills, 2 blocks) and Callie McGinnis (14 assists, 4 aces) led the Golden Knights to the season-opening romp by counts of 25-4, 25-19 and 26-24.

Spring-Ford 3, Unionville 0 – The Indians were swept in their season opener 25-21, 25-13 and 26-24 despite the strong play of Kat Tuerff.

Kennett swept  – The Blue Demons came up short in their season-opening home tri-meet, falling to Lower Merion 3-0 and Academy Park 3-1. In the 26-24, 25-16, 25-12 setback to the Aces, Kennett was led by Logan May (6 kills) and Madison Swenson (10 assists). The nightcap – a 25-21, 26-24, 24-26, 25-20 loss to Academy Park – produced solid performances from Grace Weaver (14 assists, 10 service points), Zoe Nguyen (10 kills, 2 blocks), May (8 kills), Dana Palmer (6 kills) and Swenson (15 assists).
