Bishop Shanahan overcomes Great Valley in season opener

GBB_20141205_BSvsGV_6EAST WHITELAND – Sophomore Kelly Basile connected for 13 points as Bishop Shanahan overcame a five-point third quarter deficit en route to a 48-33 nonleague girls’ basketball triumph over host Great Valley in the Great Valley Tip-Off Tournament Friday.

Devan Adams chipped in with 11 points and Ciara Forde added 10 for the Eagles, who used an 11-0 run at the end of the third quarter to seize control.

“Kelly’s a really good basketball player and she’s been doing well in practice,” said Shanahan coach Fran Burbridge, who used Basile as the first player off the bench. “It was not anything we don’t expect from her. She’s a good ballplayer, and she did really well.”

Shanahan survived some foul difficulties by switching to a zone in the second half and the move paid dividends, swinging the pendulum of  momentum the visitor’s way.

“In the second half, we had some kids in foul trouble and we couldn’t afford to have anyone pick up their fourth foul,” said Burbridge. “So it was our mindset to come out and play zone. It’s what we had to do. We adjusted and moved our zone up higher to address some of their shooters. I’m really proud of how the kids went out there believing that we had a chance to be OK.”

Leading the way for the Patriots, who led 22-20 at the break after posting a 14-4 edge in the second quarter,  was Ashlyn Smith with a game-high 14 points.
