Hewes’ hat trick helps Unionville reach state quarterfinals

(1-4) Unionville 3, (4-1) Williamsport 2 – Michael Hewes triggered a fast start with a goal 49 seconds into the contest on his way to a hat trick as the Indians (17-6-1) advanced to the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals with the victory in the opening round of the state playoffs Tuesday at Loyalsock High School.

Hewes also found the back of the net in the 40th and 41st minutes to provide a 3-0 lead and Unionville withstood a late charge by the District 4 champion Millionaires to advance to a Saturday (site and time TBA) showdown with (3-3) Central Dauphin in the state quarterfinals. Central Dauphin moved on with a 2-1 overtime victory over District 1 champion Central Bucks West Tuesday.

“I thought we came out flat the last two games against Abington (3-2 loss in district semifinals) and Spring-Ford (2-1 loss in district’s third-place game) and we talked about coming out with a lot more energy,” Unionville coach Rich Garber said in the Daily Local News. “Because if we want to go forward, we have to come out and do better in the first half.”

Hewes made that happen, providing enough cushion to help the Indians survive.

“We could have given that game right back,” Garber said. “I thought we were in complete control, and then all of a sudden – bang – they get a goal. Then they get their energy and another goal. Toward the end we did a real good job of holding them. They were awesome in the back.”

Alex Dolce finished with three saves in goal for the winners.
