Henderson, Rustin suffer season-ending losses in state openers

RADNOR – Henderson gave perennial state powerhouse Archbishop Wood all it could handle before dropping a 32-23 decision to the District 12 champion Vikings in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs Saturday.
The Warriors, seeded No. 5 from District 1, trailed 18-17 after three quarters before Wood put together a closing 14-6 run to advance to the Sweet 16.
Senior standout Emma Betrando dropped 10 points to lead the Warriors, who finished 19-8 while reaching the state playoffs for the first time in eight years. Two other prominent seniors – Viki Kneis, Brynn Cullinan – combined for seven points and Abbey Shea tacked on four more for Henderson.
Wood (20-7), which has won four state championships in the past seven years, moves on to face another Ches-Mont League entry – Bishop Shanahan – in the Round of 16 Wednesday at a time and place to be determined.

(3-2) Harrisburg 58, (1-4) Rustin 36 – The Golden Knights were unable to sustain a fast start in suffering a season-ending loss to the Cougars (22-3) in the opening round of the PIAA 5A playoffs.
Rustin, which finishes at 16-11, led 14-4 in the first quarter but Harrisburg rattled off a 10-0 run behind its pressure defense and eventually led 26-22 at the break.
Erin Gallagher dropped 13 points, Maggie O’Hare netted 9 and Lexi Zavitsky added 8 for Rustin, which saw its deficit grow to 43-25 by the end of the third quarter.
