Henderson, Downingtown East drop state playoff tuneups

(1) Springfield (Delco) 46, (3) Henderson 29 – Michaela Meredith hit three triples to finish with 10 points and Grace Ferguson grabbed 18 rebounds to go along with 5 points but it wasn’t enough as the defending district champion Warriors fell in the District 1-5A third-place game Friday night.
On the heels of two straight losses, Henderson (19-8) will now face District 3 runner-up Gettysburg (22-6) – a 31-23 loser to Palmyra in the district championship game – in the opening round of the state playoffs next Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
Trailing by 23-13 at the break following a tone-setting 11-3 first quarter, the game got out of reach for the Warriors at 35-19 after Springfield recorded a 12-6 edge in the third quarter.

(7) Council Rock North 84, (8) Downingtown East 41 – In the District 1-6A seventh-place game, the Cougars were never really a threat after falling behind 21-13 in the first quarter and 37-20 at the break, despite getting a team-high 18 points from 6-foot-5 junior center Bella Smuda.
D-East (20-8) will open the PIAA 6A playoffs next Friday against the District 3 runner-up – Dallastown (24-3) – at a time and site to be determined. Dallastown fell in the district championship game to Cumberland Valley 33-27.
