Henderson can’t sustain fast start in dropping state playoff opener to Pittston

(2-1) Pittston Area 10, (1-4) Henderson 2 – The Warriors were unable to hold an early 2-0 lead in suffering the season-ending loss in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs Monday at the University of Scranton.

Keying the fast start for Henderson, which managed just six hits, were Jordyn Melnick with an RBI-groundout and Kayla Burleson with an RBI-single in the second inning.

Trailing 2-0, the District 2 champions responded with five runs in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to advance to the state quarterfinals Thursday against the winner of Tuesday’s game between District 1 champion Bishop Shanahan and (3-3) Solanco.

Kasey Collins, Brooke Espenshade, Cameron Trotter, Brooke Matonti, Melnick and Burleson finished with one single apiece for the Warriors, who finish 10-14 overall.
