Grand night for Dodds, Shanahan; Rustin, Sun Valley fall in opening round of states

(1-2) Bishop Shanahan 73, (3-5) Hershey 38 – It was a grand night for the Eagles all around.
Kevin Dodds hit for 21 points, including the 1,000th of his stellar career, to key the wire-to-wire victory in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs Friday night at Downingtown West for Shanahan – the first state playoff win for the program since 1985.
Dodds added 10 rebounds and three blocks to his impressive stat line while Thomas Ford added 14 points and 8 boards and Joe O’Malley chipped in with 10 points for the Eagles (22-5), who face District 3 champion Milton Hershey (75-52 winner over West Chester Rustin) in the second round Tuesday night (site, time TBA).
Shanahan, which shot 55 percent (29-53) from the field, bolted out to leads of 16-6 after one quarter and 32-14 at the break and was never seriously challenged by the cold-shooting (13-50, 25 percent) Trojans (22-6).

(3-1) Milton Hershey 75, (1-7) Rustin 52 – Jake Nelson scored 17 points, Bryce Barrouk hit for 15 and Dylan DeMarco added 10 for the Golden Knights (17-11) in their season-ending loss in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs at Central Dauphin East.
Trailing 34-27 at the break, Rustin was unable to make any inroads in the second half as the Spartans posted a 41-25 edge. Donyae Baylor-Carroll nailed 7 treys en route to a game-high 35 points for Milton Hershey, which draws Bishop Shanahan in the second round of the playoffs Tuesday night.

(3-3) Northeastern 69, (1-5) Sun Valley 60 – The Vanguards’ first state playoff appearance in 28 years ended with an opening-round loss at West York High, despite strong offensive efforts from Vinny DeAngelo (24 points, 10-10 FT), Marvin Freeman (12 points, 2 treys) and Isaac Kennon (10 points, 2 treys).
Sun Valley, which finishes 19-8, was within four points at the 3:00 mark, but was unable to get any closer down the stretch as Northeastern salted the win away with solid free throw shooting.
