Downingtown West self-destructs in state playoff opener

(3-1) Cumberland Valley 3, (1-5) Downingtown West 2 – The Whippets (20-5) self-destructed in their PIAA Class 6A opener at Northern York High School Monday, managing just one hit (Evan Williams’ RBI-single) and committing six errors in their season-ending loss.

Cumberland Valley plated two runs in the seventh, capped by David Mangold’s walk-off RBI-single to finish off D-West, which had grabbed a 2-1 lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Zane Grimes delivered an RBI-single to forge the 2-2 tie in the seventh and set the stage for Mangold, who was 2-for-2.  Drew Baughman went 3-for-4 with an RBI-double in the third to break a scoreless tie and help send the Eagles (18-5) into the state quarterfinals Thursday against the winner of Tuesday’s Council Rock North-Frankford contest.

For the Whippets, Drew Britt worked six strong innings, allowing just one earned run and two walks while striking out three before giving way to Adam Grintz, who was tagged with the loss. Grintz allowed three hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out one in the season finale.
