Downingtown West ousted by powerful Emmaus in OT of state quarters

REIFFTON – Overtime has not been kind to Downingtown West.
Six of the Whippets’ seven losses this season have come in the extra session, and Saturday the heart-wrenching trend continued in a 3-2 OT setback to defending state champion Emmaus in the PIAA-AAA quarterfinals at Exeter High School.
D-West was unable to hold a 2-1 lead midway through the second half as Leah Zellner scored the equalizer for Emmaus before Meredith Sholder sealed the deal by converting a penalty stroke at the 7:32 mark of OT.
“Downingtown West played a phenomenal game against Emmaus, but fell short in OT,” said D-West coach Liz Morrow. “It was a great postseason run, which we are all very proud of.  The girls finished with a record of 17-7, scored a total of 95 goals, and only gave up 19 in 24 games.”
Caitlin Coker notched 10 saves while Romea Riccardo and Laine Garber connected for goals to lead D-West.
The Green Hornets (26-0), seeking their 12th state title, move on to face (3-2) Penn Manor in the state semifinals Tuesday. Penn Manor eliminated District 1 champion Conestoga 2-0 earlier at Exeter.
