Downingtown East’s upset bid foiled by buzzer-beater in state opener

(3-1) Harrisburg 63, (1-10) Downingtown East 61 – The D-East Cougars’ first trip to the state playoffs in program history ended in heartbreak as Davon Lee buried a floater at the final buzzer to help the District 3 champions survive a stiff challenge in the opening round of the PIAA Class 6A boys basketball playoffs Saturday night at Cumberland Valley High.
In a game filled with a slew of momentum-turning runs, D-East had grabbed a late 59-55 lead when Dave Owsik (12 points, 4 treys) hit three straight from beyond the arc and Andrew King (20 points, 4 treys) added a fourth during an incredible long-range assault that took less than 2:00 to accomplish.
The D-East Cougars had trailed 53-47 prior to the trifecta-fueled run, but the Harrisburg Cougars (19-6) had the final answer and the run that mattered most – an 8-2 closing sprint that sealed the deal.
Dylan Rowe and Tariq Kalim added 12 points apiece for D-East, which finished its landmark season at 16-12. Rowe had 8 of his points in the first quarter to help erase a 7-0 deficit and provide a 14-13 lead that expanded to 30-27 at the break.
