Downingtown East’s Montgomery tied for 10th after opening round of PIAA Championships

YORK – Downingtown East senior Wills Montgomery played through blustery, cold conditions on the demanding par-71 layout at Heritage Hills Golf Club and Resort Monday to fire a 6-over 77 that left him in a tie for 10th place after the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA Boys Golf Championships.

Montgomery, the second best scorer from District One midway through the event, is eight shots behind first-round leader Kevin Scherr of Nazareth Area, the only player below par after a 69.

The other Ches-Mont League performers included Bishop Shanahan’s Ryan Conners (tied 16th, 79), Unionville’s Nick Gianelos (tied for 23rd, 81) and West Chester Rustin’s Luke Shevlin (34th, 84). Conners had a rough back nine – coming in at 8-over in the final nine holes after opening with a one-over on his front side – No. 10 through 18.

The tournament wraps up Tuesday at Heritage Hills.
