Downingtown East’s Michael Dickson repeats as state singles champion

HERSHEY –  Downingtown East senior Michael Dickson captured his second straight PIAA singles championship Saturday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lower Merion freshman Matt Robinson at the Hershey Racquet Club.

It was not an easy road to the top for Dickson, who needed three sets to oust Robinson’s Lower Merion teammate Matt Chen in the semifinals 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

“I essentially played three finals here,” Dickson said in an Associated Press report. “I played Robby Shymansky (last year’s finalist against Dickson) in the quarters. I played Matt Chen in the district finals before, one he could have easily come out on top in. I played Matt Robinson in the district finals this year. So I’m glad I was able to keep enough of my legs to come out with the victory.

“It’s a great honor (to repeat as champion). All the matches you go through every year get tougher and tougher and with being the state champ, they’re all coming out and giving 110 per cent. So I always have to bring my best game, I played really well and won.”

Dickson broke Robinson twice in the first set en route to the 6-1 win, then with the second set locked at 3, the Cougars ace closed things out with three straight victories for the title.

“I played him in the district final and lost in three sets,” Robinson said. “I knew his game really well. But I did not have it today. He just played better and that was it.”
