Downingtown East settles for 4th in district despite 15-hit attack

(16) Conestoga 11, (7) Downingtown East 10, 8 innings – The Cougars banged out 15 hits and scored in each of their first five innings but it wasn’t enough to prevent the loss in the District 1-6A third-place game Thursday.
Conestoga overcame a 10-7 deficit and forced extra innings with three runs in the sixth before getting game-winner in the eighth on an RBI-double by Luke Czepial.
Coming off a 2-1 loss to Council Rock North in the district semifinals Tuesday, D-East got three hits from Matt Szepanski, a pair of doubles from Albert Choi and two RBI each from Austin Taylor (2-2), Zack Burton (double) and Tommy Hammett (double).
Also driving in runs for the Cougars (17-7), who open state playoffs on the road Monday against District 4 champion Williamsport, were Mike Rodriguez, Connor Munnelly(double)  and Joe Janick.
“I don’t like going into states off two losses but I think the kids are focused,” Downingtown East coach Pete Susi said on “We really hit the ball well today and we wanted to use a lot of pitchers to get them playoff experience so I think we will be alright.”
