Downingtown East moves closer to ending West’s 4-year reign; Bertolami pitches in for Shanahan

Downingtown East 4, Downingtown West 2 – David Fergueson and Grant Umberger combined on a seven-hitter and Zach Burton, Ryan Fick and Cam Reichlin drove in runs as the Cougars (13-3) topped neighborhood rival D-West (11-5) Wednesday.
The victory reduced D-East’s magic number to one for clinching the Ches-Mont League National Division title and ending the Whippets’ four-year reign atop the division. Both teams have two game left so any D-East win or D-West loss would give the Cougars the title.
D-West ace Adam Grintz allowed three first-inning runs, only two of which were earned, on an RBI-groundout by Garrett McClain and an RBI-single by Fick (3-3). The advantage reached 4-0 in the fourth when the Cougars plated another unearned run on a single by Reichlin (2-4).
The Whippets narrowed the deficit to 4-2 when Eric Grintz blasted a two-run double in the fifth but could get no closer as Umberger went two scoreless innings for the save, aided by an outstanding defensive play in center field from Albert Choi.
Bishop Shanahan 4, Coatesville 3 – The Eagles took charge with four runs in the first inning and held on for the Ches-Mont National victory behind the arm of Matt Bertolami, who worked six strong innings featuring six strikeouts against four hits, two earned runs and no walks.
Derek Gibbs and Michael Prieto drove in runs for Shanahan in the first inning uprising, which also included a two-run single from Kenny Kunzman. For the Red Raiders, who wasted 5 1/3 innings of two-hit, shutout relief from Nik Thompson, Connor Barthmaier drove in two runs with a single and home run.
