Downingtown East finally solves West; Porreca’s late trey boosts Great Valley

LIONVILLE – Malik Slay collected 17 points, Jarred Desrocher added 9 and freshman Andrew King chipped in with 8 as Downingtown East ended a five-game losing streak spanning three seasons to record a 44-34 win over crosstown rival Downingtown West in the Ches-Mont League National opener for both teams Thursday night.
The unbeaten Cougars (1-0, 4-0) overcame a sluggish start and early 9-1 deficit behind an efficient offense and ferocious zone trap defense that held the Whippets to 29 percent (12-42) shooting.
Matt Carson (11 points, 3 treys), George Gordon (10) and freshman Will Howard (7) were top guns for D-West (0-1, 1-2), which was outscored 13-7 in a turnover- and poor shooting-plagued fourth quarter after closing within 31-27.

Great Valley 61, Oxford 59 – Matt Porreca nailed a three-ball with 28 seconds left to lift the Patriots to the Ches-Mont American win. Porreca finished with 15 points and three triples for Great Valley (1-0, 3-1), which also got 16 points from Nate Graeff and 17 from Alex Capitano, who suffered a hand injury of undisclosed severity in the second half.
For the Hornets, Brian Dorsey drilled four triples and finished with a game-high 20 points and Troy Brown added 16.

Unionville 57, Sun Valley 34 – The Indians (1-0, 2-2) opened the Ches-Mont American campaign with the lopsided win behind Bo Fuery-Bastian (10 points), Brendan Barrett (9) and Joe Zubilaga (8). All told 11 players got into the scorebook for Unionville, helping offset a game-high 19 points from Vinny DeAngelo for Sun Valley.

Coatesville 61, Avon Grove 42 – The Red Raiders used a 37-21 second-half run to pull away from a narrow 24-21 edge in the Ches-Mont National opener. Kamau Brickus had 16 points and Hassan Young added 14 for Coatesville (1-0, 1-2).
For the Red Devils, Brandon McCullough collected 14 points and Aiden Russo chipped in with 9.

For the Blue Demons, who never recovered after falling behind 17-3 in the first quarter, Bowden duPhily led the way with 9 points.
