Downingtown East falls short in Pennsylvania Cup Class AA final

UNIVERSITY PARK – Downingtown East’s improbable climb to the top of the state ice hockey ranks ended in disappointment Saturday when the Cougars absorbed a 3-1 loss to Erie Cathedral Prep in the Pennsylvania Cup Class AA final at Penn State.

It all started out well enough for the Cougars, who had reached the state final by capturing the Flyers Cup as a No. 13 seed. D-East grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period when Ben Robertson scored. But the rest of the day belonged to Eric Prep, which got second-period goals from Dillon Elliott, Joe Kelly and Hunter Emerson to seize control.

Cougars goalie Jeff Cummings  was brilliant in defeat, registering 29 saves.
