Coatesville, Downingtown West reach District 1-6A quarterfinals; Shanahan’s Miller delivers another no-hitter

(12) Coatesville 6, (5) Hatboro-Horsham 0 – McKenna Sherman needed just 55 pitches to fire a two-hit shutout as the Red Raiders (16-6) moved on to the District 1-6A quarterfinals with the second-round win Wednesday.
Coatesville set the tone with three runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Payton Landis and an RBI-single by Maddie Fleming. The Red Raiders expanded the advantage to 6-0 with three more in the third, keyed by Fleming’s sacrifice fly and RBI-singles from Phoebe Clemens and Dan Harvey.
The victory sends Coatesville, which turned a pair of double plays during a solid defensive performance, into a district quarterfinal matchup Friday (4 pm) at (4) North Penn.

(7) Downingtown West 9, (10) Council Rock South 2 – The Whippets(15-5)  rolled into the District 1-6A quarterfinals behind a 10-hit attack and stellar work in the circle from Natalie Beebe.
Beebe went the distance for the win, allowing just four hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out nine, helping her own cause at the plate with a single, double and two RBI.
Hannah Greider (triple) also drove in two runs for D-West, which hosts (15) Garnet Valley Friday (4 pm) with the winner nailing down a state playoff bid.  In addition to Beebe, Cait Coker (double, 2 runs) and Taylor Posner (RBI) also had two hits apiece.
 
(19) Council Rock North 5, (3) Avon Grove 4, 10 innings – The Red Devils suffered the season-ending loss in the second round of districts when the Indians plated a pair of runs in the top of the 10th on a run-scoring single by freshman pinch hitter Katie Procell and a double by Riley Sheehy (3-for-4, home run, 4 RBI),
Lexi Barnhart and Allyson Wallauer had three hits apiece for Avon Grove, which got 13 strikeouts in the complete-game loss from Rachel Butler.
The Red Devils (16-4) had scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball to force extra innings and got another in the home 10th after the International tiebreaker (runner on second to start inning) rule was installed at the start of the frame.

(2) Bishop Shanahan 10, (10) Upper Merion 0, 5 innings – Devon Miller pitched her  second straight no-hitter in the second round of the District 1-5A playoffs and fourth of the season as the Eagles locked up a state playoff spot and berth in the district semifinals.
Miller walked two and struck out 12 in her gem and now has 10 hitless innings in a pair of 10-run district romps. Shanahan (16-5) scored in all five of its trips to the plate as Emily Sano and Hannah Keiper were both 3-for-3 with a combined four RBI while Casey McAllister drove in three runs with a pair of hits including a double.
The Eagles host (3) Penncrest Friday (4 pm) with a district final spot up for grabs.

(3) Penncrest 7, (11) Rustin 2 – The Golden Knights held a 2-0 lead into the middle of the fifth inning before the hosts struck for five runs and tacked on two more in the sixth to end Rustin’s season in the District 1-5A quarterfinals.
Losing pitcher Nicole McCarthy had a two-run double in the fourth inning to provide the early lead for the Golden Knights, who finish 12-10.
