Choi powers hard-hitting Downingtown East into state quarterfinals

(1-4) Downingtown East 11, (2-1) Hazleton 5 – Albert Choi went 3-4 with a pair of triples, driving in four runs, as the Cougars pounded out 14 hits en route to victory in the opening round of the PIAA Class 6A playoffs at Pittston Field in Hughestown Monday.
Choi’s biggest hit was a bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning that snapped a 5-5 tie and sent D-East to the state quarterfinals, where the opponent will be District 1 champion Neshaminy Thursday at a time and site to be determined.
Grant Umberger worked three shutout innings behind David Ferguson (8 strikeouts in four innings) to notch the win, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Also for the Cougars (18-6), catcher Connor Lynch was 3-3 with two RBI and all but eliminated the Hazleton running game by throwing out three on base stealing attempts.
Will Vincent also had three hits for D-East out of the leadoff spots, scoring three runs and driving in another.
