Ches-Mont League to realign for football in 2019

WEST CHESTER – Size matters in football.
That much is apparent each time the ‘bigs’ line up against the ‘smalls’ under the Friday night lights, often resulting in a lopsided outcome and too many ‘mercy rule’ applications.
To correct the competitive imbalance that frequently exists with those traditional matchups, the Ches-Mont League has decided to realign its football divisions for the 2019 season.
Class 6A programs Downingtown East, Downingtown West, Coatesville and Avon Grove will be joined by traditional 4A powerhouse Bishop Shanahan in the National Division. D-East, D-West and two-time National Division champion Coatesville have all shown their might this season by advancing to the quarterfinals of the District 1-6A playoffs with opening round wins Friday.
The move, which was approved 8-4 by the league principals Friday and is on a one-year trial basis, will send West Chester Henderson and West Chester East – both Class 5A schools – from the National to the American Division, joining West Chester Rustin, Great Valley, Unionville, Sun Valley, Oxford and Kennett in a seven-team all 5A division.
Teams will play each divisional opponent once with one or two non-divisional crossover games also on the newly-formatted schedule.
