Boys tennis: Unionville, Great Valley advance to state team semifinals

HERSHEY  – Unionville topped Eric Cathedral Prep 3-1 and Great Valley edged Fox Chapel 3-2 Friday to advance to the PIAA Class AAA boys team tennis championship semifinals at the Hershey Racquet Club.

The Indians, who swept the doubles matches behind the teams of Daniel Hopping/Zack Sokoloff (4-5, 6-1, 7-5 (6-1)) and Clay Horowitz/Ethan Fitzsimons (6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (6-4)), meets District 1 foe Council Rock North in the semis Saturday at 8:30 am. Unionville also got a hard-earned 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win from Victor Li at third singles.

The other semifinal pits the Patriots against another District 1 school, Lower Merion, with the semifinal winners advancing to the championship match at 3:30 in Hershey.

Great Valley captured tough wins at second and third singles and first doubles to move on. Sam Kesti won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Nikhil Gangoli showed his resiliency with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 triumph at third singes, and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Amish Saini and Ryan Hamel also needed three sets to secure the win – prevailing by counts of 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
