Bishop Shanahan captures fourth straight district championship

(1) Bishop Shanahan 3, (3) Garnet Valley 1 – The Eagles (20-1) notched their fourth straight District 1-4A girls volleyball championship with the wire-to-wire win Thursday at Harriton, prevailing by counts of 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-9.

Cara Shultz (15 kills, 8 digs), Alysa Wright (11 kills, 4 blocks), Julie Gallagher (21 digs) and Bridgette Kelly (7 blocks) triggered the historical victory for Shanahan, which equaled the district record for consecutive girls volleyball championships held by Merion Mercy in Class 2A.

“To win four in a row is big-time” said Shanahan coach Greg Ashman in the Daily Local News. “It’s something (our players) will remember for the rest of their lives. When they get to be my age, they will look back and realize this was one of the greatest times of their lives.”

The Eagles. who haven’t lost to a district opponent in more than three years, will open the state playoffs Tuesday (TBA) against Cumberland Valley (18-2), the third-place team from District 3.
