Avon Grove, Coatesville ousted in opening round of 6A state playoffs

ROYERSFORD – The clock struck 12 on District 1-6A champion Avon Grove’s season Monday in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs at Spring-Ford as the Red Devils were victimized by a poor start in a 9-5 loss to Council Rock North.
After wasting several scoring opportunities in the opening three innings, Avon Grove fell behind 9-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth before making a late charge.
The (1-5) Indians, who move on to face District 2 champion Hazleton in the state quarterfinals Thursday at a time and site to be determined, were keyed by Sabrina Crane’s two-run homer in the third and winning pitcher Jenna Khatzian’s 2-for-2 outing that produced three RBI.
Making its fifth straight state playoff appearance, Avon Grove finally got on the board in the sixth when Allyson Wallauer stroked a leadoff double and came around to score on an infield error. Carly Raymond followed with a solo homer to cut the gap to 9-2.
Down to their final three outs, the Red Devils plated four runs on singles by Mack Van Sciver, Megan Nolan, Morgan DeFeo and Olivia Kunitsky (RBI) and Wallauer’s sacrifice fly.
Avon Grove finishes its season at 19-6 and will return all but seniors Nolan and Kelly Murphy next season.
