Avon Grove, Carozza earn gold at opening day of districts

PHILADELPHIA – Avon Grove triggered a strong showing for the Ches-Mont League girls at the opening day of the District 1-AAA swimming championships Thursday at La Salle University.

Led by a first-place finish from its 200-yard medley relay team of Emma Brinton, Olivia Paoletti, Sydney Paglia and Sophie May) with a clocking of 1:44.99, the Red Devils currently occupy second in the team standings (145 points) behind North Penn (196).

Also in the top 10 are Unionville (4th, 106), Downingtown East (5th, 84 and Downingtown West (7th, 71).

Individually, the C-M girls racked up one gold medal and a pair of silvers with West Chester East’s Ann Carozza touching first in the 100 butterfly (55.03). AG’s Olivia Paoletti capturing second in the 200 IM (2:01.57) and Unionville’s Carmyn Carter finishing second in the 50 free (23.82). Carter also was 7th in the 200 free (1:52.79.

The quick start by Avon Grove also featured a bronze medal winning performance from Emma Brinton in the 200 IM (2:03.39).

The meet concludes Friday at La Salle.
